Ethiopian Airlines – The New Spirit Of Africa

It was in 1946, that Ethiopian Airlines started providing its outstanding services to the African people, and has continued to do so for close to 70 years. It was in the spirit of pan Africanism and Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to bring African nations closer together that Ethiopian has sustained this service.

Ethiopian currently serves 49 destinations in Africa and has the only daily and double-daily east west connection in the continent. Having accomplished its goal of “Bringing Africa Together,” Ethiopian has been working to connect Africa to the rest of the world with a fresh motto, Ethiopian -  “The New Spirit of Africa.”

Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing and most profitable airline in Africa, was ranked by IATA as the largest airline in Africa in revenue and profit in 2014. During operations in the past seven decades, Ethiopian has been a pioneer of African aviation as an aircraft technology leader providing the first jet service in the continent in 1962, availing the first African B767 in 1984, the first African B777-200LR in 2010 and the first African, and second only to Japan, B787 Dreamliner in 2012.

Soon after the delivery of the inaugural Dreamliner, dubbed “Africa First”, true to its motto and vision, Ethiopian deployed it primarily to rotating African destinations heralding an African renaissance and a new spirit for the continent. By so doing Ethiopian gave precedence for African passengers to enjoy cabin features such as less noise, the largest windows in the sky, higher ceilings, increased humidity and unique lighting on board the Ethiopian Dreamliner.

Ethiopian commands the lion’s share of the pan-African passenger and cargo network operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 83 international destinations across five continents covering Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia and North America and South America. The Ethiopian fleet includes ultra-modern and environmentally friendly aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 777-200LR, Boeing 777-200LR Freighter and Bombardier Q-400 with double cabin.

Ethiopian was pleased to join the prestigious Star Alliance network, the most established and leading Airline Alliance, in December 2011. Through this membership, Ethiopian is able to provide its customers convenient, safe and secure global access, and a hassle-free service experience for customers. The Star Alliance membership enables Ethiopian to offer its customers’ connections to 1,316 airports in 192 countries and more than 18,500 daily departures with its fellow member airlines.

To provide a wider choice of destinations to travelers, Ethiopian has entered into code share agreements with several international airlines, namely; United Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Scandinavian Airlines, South African Airways, Turkish Airlines, Rwanda Air, Austrian Airlines, ASKY Airlines, Air China, Asiana Airlines, Mozambique Airlines, Air India, Egypt Air, Oman Air, Singapore Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines.

All our customers can utilise the geographic advantage that the Ethiopian main hub, Addis Ababa offers as it connects destinations to/from east, west, north and south.

A key strategic objective of Ethiopian is to have multiple hubs in Africa. Ethiopian has already established different hubs in Lomé (Togo) in partnership with ASKY Airlines and at Lilongwe, Malawi with Malawian Airlines. The objective with these airlines is to tap into the regional market and create hub-to-hub connections that enable these locations and Ethiopian to feed each other. Passengers from these hubs can take advantage of long haul non-stop flights offered by Ethiopian.
